Administrative Division

The Administrative Division handles the day-to-day operations of the department.  It consists of the Chief of Police, Administrative Sergeant and three civilian personnel.
In addition to handling the department budget and fleet, the Administration Division is also home to the Records Management Unit.  The unit is responsible for a wide variety of duties including:

  • Providing essential administrative support and services to Investigations, Patrol and Police Administration. 
  • Accurately processing, maintaining, and disseminating all police records that include confidential, private and sensitive data pursuant to Minnesota’s Data Practices laws.
  • Completing case referrals to the Farmington City Attorney’s Office and Dakota County Attorney’s Office for review of criminal charges.
  • Providing customer service to the general public and other government agencies in person at the Farmington Police Department lobby and over the phone on the administrative phone line.

Investigations Division

The Investigations Division is made up of one Sergeant and four detectives.  Two of those detectives are assigned to standard investigations, while another is assigned to the Dakota County Drug Task Force and the last is a School Resource Officer.

As its name implies, the Investigations Division investigates crimes that occur within the City of Farmington.  These crimes range from simple thefts to more complex assaults and homicides.  As time goes on and technology evolves, fraud crimes are becoming more and more frequent as well.

The School Resource Officer is assigned to Farmington High School and handles most incidents that occur on school grounds.

The Drug Task Force officer is assigned to a county-wide task force that investigates drug crimes.  Over the last few years, we have seen their activity in Farmington grow so we are fortunate to be able to participate in this unit.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the largest and most visible component of the Farmington Police Department.  Patrol is staffed by four Patrol Sergeants and 13 Patrol Officers. 
Patrol staff work 12 hour shifts and they provide emergency response 24/7/365.  Patrol provides the initial response to almost every emergency in call in the city including, but not limited to, medical emergencies, traffic crashes, fire calls, crimes in progress, domestic disputes, and mental health crises.  They also provide the initial response to a wide variety of non-emergency calls such as, after-the-fact crime reports, runaway reports, public assists (e.g. car lockouts), and civil disputes.

In addition to responding to calls for service, Patrol Officers enforce traffic law and spend time conducting what we refer to as Directed Patrol.  Directed Patrol is focused on addressing a specific problem.  It could be monitoring an area where we’ve received a high number of traffic related complaints or it could be something like patrolling a neighborhood that has experienced a high number of thefts from vehicles.

Well-trained officers responding to calls are appropriately equipped.  Each of our patrol vehicles is equipped with emergency oxygen, a First aid kit, an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), fire extinguisher, spike strips, portable breath test devices, a laptop computer with printer, and many other odd and ends that might be needed.  We also have one patrol vehicle equipped with a portable bullet resistant shield and extra tools for forcing entry into buildings if it becomes necessary.
