Farmington Fire Department is dedicated to provide for the safety and welfare of the community that we serve through the preservation of life, property and the environment. 

Meet the Command Staff:

Fire Chief Justin R. Elvestad

Fire Chief Justin Elvestad proudly serves the City of Farmington since 2002. Elvestad grew up in Farmington and has always had a passion for the fire service. Only a few years after high school, Elvestad joined the fire department as a volunteer firefighter. He has risen through the ranks of lieutenant, captain, assistant fire chief and is presently the fire chief.

Elvestad is a member of the Youth Fire Prevention Intervention Team for Dakota County. He is a member of the Fire Marshall Association of Minnesota, and the Minnesota Chapter- International Association of Arson Investigators. 

Chief Elvestad holds an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science Technology from Hennepin Technical College. He is a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician, and holds several state certifications, some of which include Fire Inspector II, Fire Investigator, and Local Hazard Zone Manager.

Deputy Fire Chief Matthew C. Price

(Fire Prevention Bureau)

Deputy Chief Matthew Price has been with the Farmington Fire Department since 2013 and has risen through the ranks to include positions as firefighter, lieutenant, and captain before being promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief of the Fire Prevention Bureau. Many duties include inspections, public education, and investigations. Price is responsible for the training of the department to include scheduling, resources, and complying with all NFPA standards.

Price is a member of the Minnesota Fire Chiefs Association, Fire Marshall Association of Minnesota, and the Minnesota Chapter- International Association of Arson Investigators.

Deputy Chief Price holds numerous Minnesota State Fire Service certifications including Fire Inspector II, FAO-Aerial, Public Life Safety Educator, and is a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician. 

Assistant Fire Chief James M. Schmitz

(Fire and EMS Operations)

Assistant Chief James Schmitz has been with the Farmington Fire Department for over 20 years and has risen through the ranks to include positions as firefighter, lieutenant and captain before promotion to the rank of Assistant Chief of Fire and EMS Operations. For many years Schmitz has been involved with training firefighters and oversight of the department training programs. Today, Schmitz collaborates with other area departments to maximize instruction at a local training academy and reduce duplication of effort and cost. In addition, Schmitz is responsible for training documentation and submitting reimbursements for our training to the State of Minnesota.

Assistant Chief Schmitz holds numerous Minnesota State Fire Service certifications including Fire Fighter II, Fire Apparatus Operator III, Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I and Emergency Medical Responder. Schmitz is a member of the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association and Dakota County Fire Training Group. Schmitz lives with his wife and the family rescue dog, Rosey. He has two children.

District Fire Chief Adam Fischer

(Vehicle Support Services) 

District Chief Adam Fischer has been a lifelong resident of Farmington and joined the Fire Department in 2003. He has held the ranks of firefighter, engineer, lieutenant and captain before being promoted to District Chief. Fischer was awarded “Firefighter of the Year” in 2007. Since the beginning of his fire service career, Fischer has always had involvement with maintaining and overseeing the department’s fire apparatus. He is responsible for scheduling apparatus maintenance as well as ordering equipment. Fischer has been involved with writing specifications for several of the department's fire apparatus and overseeing the build processes of these trucks, which include Chief 1 Squad, Chief 2 Squad, Rescue 1, Rescue 2, Engine 22, Engine 11 and Ladder 1. He holds fire service certifications in Firefighter II, Fire Apparatus Operator III, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Fire Officer I and is a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician.

Outside of his duties as District Fire Chief, he works full-time for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in the Traffic Management office. He is also the Gambling Manager for the Farmington Firefighters Relief Association.
