A Big Day for Farmington Fire Department!
Sunday, Feb. 1 starting at 6 am, the Farmington Fire Department officially began our first full-time staffing shift. Three rotating crews will now be working 48-hour shifts, with our part-time staff continuing to help fill the trucks and support operations.
We are incredibly excited to provide this enhanced level of service to the City of Farmington, as well as our service area in neighboring communities. This is a big step forward, and we’re proud to continue serving our community with dedication and professionalism.
Full-time Firefighters
Captains
Matt Dinneen, Fire Captain
While new to the department, Captain Dinneen is not new to the community. He and his family have called Farmington home since 2009. Matt brings more than 17 years of full-time experience in fire and emergency services, along with a strong focus on leadership, training, and community service. Before entering the fire service, he served seven years in the United States Air Force as a B-52 Radar Navigator, an experience that shaped his approach to teamwork, preparation, and staying calm under pressure. Matt and his wife Jen raised their two daughters in Farmington, where both graduated from Farmington High School. In his free time, Matt enjoys spending time with his family and traveling around the world with them, playing with his dogs, working out, and working on projects around the house.
Brian Hanson, Fire Captain
Fire Captain Brian Hanson has been a member of Farmington Fire & Rescue since March of 2010 and is proud to call the fire service his career. He values trust, teamwork, and leading by example, and believes those principles are the foundation of a strong crew. In his free time, Captain Hanson enjoys spending time with his wife and their dog, whether it’s on the lake or at the cabin.
Steve Karsten, Fire Captain
Steve joined the Farmington Fire Department in 2021 as a volunteer firefighter. In 2023 he decided to make firefighting a full-time career. Previously Steve worked as a firefighter for the Pine Bend Refinery and City of Lakeville. He has many certifications to help further his career. His favorite part of being in the Farmington Fire Department is promoting fire prevention during community events such as parades, educational events, and open houses.
In his off-hours, Steve enjoys running, cheering on his kids in their various activities, snowboarding and playing softball.

Matthew Jahns, Full-time Firefighter
Matthew has called Farmington home since 2018 and has proudly served as a firefighter for the past six years. When he’s not on the job, you’ll usually find him spending time with his wife and their two kids—most often at the motocross track, cheering his son on and enjoying family time.
Katelynn Scholl, Full-time Firefighter
Katelynn joined the Farmington Fire Department in 2022 with a desire to gain EMS experience. Over the time in fire academy, she realized that firefighting was a challenge, but not one she would back down from. With the support from Lieutenants who took extra time to work on skills, and fellow firefighters answering questions and offering feedback, she was able to gain proficiency even in areas where it was difficult. Katelynn is excited about the opportunity to serve the Farmington community in a full-time position, bringing additional EMS knowledge to the table as a nationally registered Paramedic. When Katelynn is not at work, she loves spending time with her family and working on various half-finished crochet projects and reading books. Katelynn is committed to continuing her service to those in need.
