Become a Firefighter
The Farmington Fire Department recruits paid on-call firefighters every spring and applications are accepted in February and March. We hold recruitment informational meetings during this time.

Profile
When not at training or working a four or eight hour shift, paid-on-call firefighters typically respond from their home or work to their assigned fire station when paged out. It requires attendance at full department training courses and drills, as well as 16 hours of shift. Firefighters are also responsible for responding to 35% of their assigned paged station calls every six months. Firefighters are paid an hourly wage while on calls, at training or working fire prevention and community events. Firefighters in good standing are eligible for a lump sum pension from the Farmington Firefighters Relief Association; current full vested pension at 15 years is $160,000. The average firefighter spends over 16 hours per month on shifts and an additional 4 hours per week on public education events for the community.

Informational Meetings
These informational meetings provide an informal setting for those interested in the position to come ask questions, watch a quick presentation, tour the fire station and meet current firefighters. All are welcome to attend any of the meetings. Spouses are also welcome to join since they will also be affected by a position such as this.

No fire experience is necessary, successful candidates will be provided in-house training and a joint fire academy to learn the job.

- What are the job duties?

- Extinguish and prevent fires, effect rescue, and render first aid.
- Participate in field, classroom, and physical training programs, and keep current with significant changes in fire codes, fire prevention practices, firefighting equipment, procedures and methods.
- Maintain apparatus, equipment, tools, and fire quarters to ensure all are in good condition and working order.
- Drive and operate all fire vehicles and have the ability to put into service all equipment used by the department.
- Responsible for completing accurate run reports after each call.
- What are the qualifications?

- Must live within a 10-minute drive time to a Farmington fire station and be able to respond to calls within the response time requirements established by the city.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid MN Driver's License
- Must complete the physical agility test requirements of the position and pass a firefighter medical examination.
